The role of nonprofit leaders and executives is evolving. The operating environment of a nonprofit organization has changed including post-pandemic giving trends, pay equity issues, and general operating support. A good leader of an NPO must pay attention to these things to make sure the organization continues to have effective leadership, effective and impactful programs and service delivery and effective fundraising strategies. Join us to explore the skills you need to develop to become an effective nonprofit executive including effective fundraising strategies, the importance of relationship building, and results-driven marketing communication practices.

Candace McRae Walsh

Candace McRae Walsh is an Associate Professor of Teaching and Coordinator within the Department of Public and Nonprofit Administration at the University of Memphis. Additionally, she is a part of the leadership team of the department’s Institute of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (IPNL) and is the faculty advisor for students who minor in Nonprofit Management. The courses she teaches include Introduction to Nonprofit Organizations, Civic Engagement and Volunteerism and Social Justice and Nonprofit Advocacy. Additionally, she is the internship coordinator for Nonprofit Management minors.

Prior to joining the U of M faculty in 2014, Ms. Walsh was an adjunct instructor of U.S. History and American Government at Mid-South Community College and was co-owner/principal consultant with Magnolia Blue, LLC, a Memphis-based consulting firm specializing in strategic planning and mediation for small businesses and non-profit organizations. Ms. Walsh has more than 30 years of professional experience in the fields of journalism, municipal government administration and nonprofit management. She also has served in various leadership capacities on nonprofit boards across the United States.

Ms. Walsh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and earned the Certified Nonprofit Professional credential from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri. Additionally, she is trained in conflict resolution and has, in the past, been approved as a Rule 31 General Civil Mediator by the Tennessee State Supreme Court.
